Biography
Isaac Jonathan Cruz González, more commonly known as Isaac Cruz, was born on May 23, 1998, in Mexico City, Mexico. From a young age, Cruz was drawn to the world of boxing, and his passion for the sport was evident as he honed his skills, developed his unique fighting style, and quickly earned the nickname “Pitbull.” He turned professional at a young age, and his potential was immediately recognized within the boxing community.
After compiling a professional record of 19-1-1, he faced former world title contender Diego Magdaleno in October 2020, winning the bout in just 53 seconds. In 2021, Cruz had several notable fights, including a victory over former WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas and a tightly contested bout against WBA (Regular) lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, which resulted in the second loss of Cruz’s career.
Despite the setback, Cruz bounced back in 2022 with a technical knockout victory over former unified featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa. Later in the year, he secured another win against Eduardo Ramirez, earning the vacant WBC Silver lightweight title.
Technical Overview
Isaac Cruz fights out of a squared-up “peek-a-boo” defense reminiscent of Mike Tyson. The squared-up stance opens him up for punches up the middle since his centerline is exposed, however, the peek-a-boo defense prioritizes defending the centerline with a tight guard. This leaves his flanks around the guard exposed which Cruz avoids with bobbing and weaving head movement. The squared stance makes it easier for him to roll under hooks and just like Mike Tyson, it allows him to counter with vicious hooks of his own. Isaac Cruz is a relentless pressure fighter who prefers to get into close range and make the fight dirty. One of the staples of inside fighting is getting your head onto your opponent’s chest so you can batter their body with hooks and Cruz does this exceptionally well. Blocking and dodging punches allows him to cut the distance very quickly, especially when he gets a punch he can counter. As a pressure fighter, opponents will be expected to utilize the jab to keep Cruz at bay. Cruz’s counter of choice for a jab will be to slip on the inside and counter over the top with an overhand right. This often leaves his opponents stunned enough for him to step in and finish them off.
