Biography
Andy Ruiz Jr. was born on September 11, 1989, and is a renowned professional boxer from the United States of America. Raised in Imperial, California, Ruiz was introduced to boxing at a young age, and by the age of 19, he turned professional, quickly earning a reputation as a formidable fighter in the ring.
By 2013, he had already made a name for himself by winning numerous professional fights. Some of his key career highlights include winning the WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title in 2016, and the NABF heavyweight title in 2018. However, the pinnacle of his career came in June 2019, when he shocked the world by defeating Anthony Joshua to win the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles. With this victory, he became the first boxer of Mexican descent to win a heavyweight title. Despite losing the rematch in December 2019, Ruiz’s performance against Joshua solidified his status as a top heavyweight contender.
In the face of the global pandemic, Ruiz returned to the ring in 2021, defeating Chris Arreola. Then, in September of 2022, he squared off with Luis Ortiz Jr, and after not easy 12 rounds, Andy Ruiz managed to get a win via unanimous decision.
Technical Overview
Ruiz's technical expertise in the ring is exemplified by his execution of hooks and jabs, which are characterized by geometric precision. He employs curved trajectories with the specific purpose of targeting his adversaries' guards or bodies with his hooks. His unique style incorporates meticulous adjustments in his hooks, utilizing nuanced level changes to ensure that his forearm hooks penetrate his opponent's mouth or nose level. Ruiz is proficient in employing Mexican-style hooks that are wide-ranging. He uses effective pivots and a diverse range of punch tempo variations to keep his opponents off balance and maintain control of the bout. He draws inspiration from Alvarez's techniques, emphasizing shoulder pinching, keeping his right hand close, and quickly retracting punches while maintaining relaxed elbows.
Ruiz's multifaceted blend of technical expertise, strategic adjustments, and mastery of diverse punch variations cements his position as a formidable presence in the boxing arena, providing a platform for exciting matchups and contributing to the rich history of boxing.
