Biography
Liam Mark Smith, also known as “Beefy,” was born on July 27, 1988, and is a renowned professional boxer from Liverpool, England. Smith’s journey in boxing began during his teenage years at Rotunda ABC, where he claims the sport saved him from getting into trouble on the streets. His dedication and passion for boxing led him to become a two-time winner of the ABA Championships in 2007 and 2008, fighting at light welterweight.
Smith made his professional debut at light-middleweight on October 10, 2008, against Duncan Cottier, and by 2012, he had already made a name for himself by winning numerous professional fights. Some of his key career highlights include holding the WBO light-middleweight title from 2015 to 2016, and at the regional level, he has held multiple light-middleweight championships, including the British and Commonwealth titles between 2012 and 2015.
After losing via unanimous decision to Russian boxer Magomed Kurbanov in May 2021, Liam continued to prove to everyone that he is still a force to be reckoned, by getting wins over great boxers such as Anthony Fowler, Jessie Vargas, and Hassan Mwakinyo. As of 2023, Smith managed to get a win over Chris Eubank Jr. via technical knockout.
Technical Overview
Liam Smith fights out of a textbook high guard fighting stance with his hands high and tight with his chin tucked. He will usually opt to stay in this stance to defend punches, shelling up behind his high guard but pulling his shoulders forward as well to add additional protection for his chin. This is important because Smith likes to fight in the middle range where punches are most dangerous. From this range, he can get his offense going, which often starts with the jab to the head or body. By staying in punching range, he can then follow his jab with power shots like a straight right hand or left hook. Since starting his offense with the jab becomes predictable, Smith has developed the skill of moving his head off line with his jab to avoid counter punches, then he counters his opponent’s attempt to counter with a right hand.
