The boxing world missed out on a potential super fight this year as a clash between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Gervonta “Tank” Davis failed to materialize. According to Leonard Ellerbe, adviser to Davis, the decision ultimately rested with Lomachenko, who opted to take the rest of the year off following his victory over George Kambosos Jr. in May. While disappointed, Ellerbe expressed understanding of Loma’s circumstances.

Lomachenko, now 36, has faced considerable challenges in recent years, both in and out of the ring. The Ukrainian legend’s controversial loss to Devin Haney in 2023 and the ongoing situation in his homeland have reportedly influenced his decision to take a break. Ellerbe acknowledged these factors and said he respects Lomachenko’s career and achievements.

Fans and pundits, however, have speculated on other reasons for Lomachenko’s reluctance. Concerns about judging, the high risk involved in fighting Davis, and questions about timing - some believe Davis waited until Loma aged to secure an advantage - are among the theories floated. Lomachenko had been vocal about wanting this fight as far back as 2018, but the timing never aligned.

Tank Davis, meanwhile, continues to forge ahead with his career. He is now scheduled to face Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1, 2025, in a fight that has already been delayed multiple times. Ellerbe emphasized that Davis remains focused and won’t wait indefinitely for Lomachenko. "The show goes on," he said, adding that fighters like William Zepeda could be next in line.

While Lomachenko vs. Davis remains a dream fight for many, its absence in 2024 leaves a lingering sense of what could have been. Whether this matchup happens in the future or becomes another missed opportunity, only time will tell.
