The WBC has mandated a clash between #1 Christian Mbilli and #2 Jaime Munguia for the interim super middleweight title. The winner will secure mandatory challenger status for Canelo Alvarez’s WBC title, though it remains uncertain if Canelo will opt to defend against the victor. Canelo previously defeated Munguia in May, comfortably earning a unanimous decision with scores of 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112.

Mbilli, a 2016 Olympian, brings a blend of power, aggression, and high output that could trouble Munguia. Recent wins over quality opponents like Sergiy Derevyanchenko (UD 10) and Mark Heffron (KO 1) have for sure solidified Mbilli’s position as a top contender. Munguia, meanwhile, continues to face criticism for soft matchmaking throughout his career, highlighted by his upcoming December 14 bout against Bruno Surace in Tijuana, Mexico.

If Munguia hopes to rebuild his reputation and secure another shot at Canelo or a big-name opponent like Edgar Berlanga, he’ll need to prove himself against Mbilli.
