Galal Yafai is now ready for the biggest fight of his career against Sunny Edwards on November 30 at Resorts World Arena in Birmingham. The Olympic gold medalist, now ranked No. 4 by the WBC and No. 10 by the WBO, will face Edwards for the interim WBC flyweight title in front of his hometown fans.
Yafai, a late bloomer in the sport, began his boxing journey at 18 and balanced training with a full-time factory job. Reflecting on his earlier struggles, Yafai said, “I hated my job. Winning Olympic gold showed me what hard work can achieve.” Now, at 31, he’s pushing for a world title in a division stacked with talent, including Kenshiro Teraji and Angel Ayala.

This showdown has a backstory. Yafai and Edwards share a history as amateur opponents and sparring partners. While Edwards, a former IBF champion, brings experience and a polished style, Yafai believes he has what it takes to win. “I’ve sparred Sunny many times. If I struggled, this fight wouldn’t be happening.”
Yafai remains grounded despite the high stakes. “For me, it’s not just about the title - it’s about beating Sunny. Titles are great, but this fight is personal.” Still, he’s already considering the future. “Whoever wins will likely face Kenshiro. That’s a great fight, but I’m not looking past Sunny.”
