The near future of IBF lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko hangs on the results of an MRI exam scheduled for early next year in his native Ukraine. Manager Egis Klimas told that the back examination will determine if the 36-year-old three-division champ can continue fighting following an injury suffered in training.

Lomachenko last fought in May, stopping George Kambosos Jr. in the 11th round in Australia. Before that, he dropped a close decision to then-undisputed champion Devin Haney, and later balked at a unification bout with Gervonta “Tank” Davis, who is moving ahead with his own title defense on March 1 against Lamont Roach Jr.

Top Rank officials say it’s unclear if Lomachenko will resume fighting in 2025. If his MRI results indicate retirement is best, manager Klimas says No. 2-ranked Zaur Abdullaev may take on No. 4 Raymond Muratalla for the IBF belt. Meanwhile, rising contender Keyshawn Davis challenges new WBO champ Denys Berinchyk on February 14, leaving the IBF’s top spot vacant.

Lomachenko’s next step depends on that exam. “If he’s healthy, he’ll fight again,” Klimas said.
