Gervonta Davis fought Lamont Roach to a surprising majority draw on Saturday night, leaving many convinced Roach deserved the nod, especially after the controversy in the ninth round when Davis took a knee to have his face wiped without being ruled down. That incident has sparked quite a bit of debate, but for now, Davis insists there won’t be an immediate rematch.
According to Davis, he’s already lined up his next opponent, despite telling media he “definitely” wants to fight Roach again. Veteran reporter Keith Idec, however, claims Roach is contractually guaranteed a second bout with the lightweight superstar, noting that promotional agreements usually lock in such terms for close or disputed contests.
Meanwhile, the New York State Athletic Commission could weigh in on how referee Steve Willis handled the knee scenario. Fans felt Roach should have benefited from a legitimate knockdown call.
For Roach, this was a golden chance to capture some of the biggest momentum in boxing, and he still hopes to settle things once and for all. But for now, Davis seems ready to move forward with a different fight, leaving the newly labeled “controversial draw” behind, at least temporarily. We’ll see if Roach uses his contractual right to push for an immediate encore - and whether that prompts Davis to change his tune.
