In a dominant performance, Vergil Ortiz Jr. knocked out Samuel Vargas in the seventh round of their welterweight fight on Friday night at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.
Ortiz, who is ranked No. 3 by the WBC and No. 6 by the WBA, was in control from the start of the fight. He landed a number of hard punches, including a right hand that knocked Vargas down in the second round.
Vargas was able to get up, but he was clearly hurt. Ortiz continued to press the attack, and he eventually put Vargas away with a flurry of punches in the seventh round.
The official time of the stoppage was 2:11 of the seventh round.
