Biography
Gilberto Ramirez was born on June 19, 1991, and is a highly respected professional boxer. Born and raised in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Ramirez was drawn to boxing from an early age, inspired by the sport’s intensity and the opportunity it provided to challenge himself. By the age of 18, he had turned professional, showcasing his talent and potential to the world.
Ramírez’s strength and speed made him a formidable opponent, and by 2010, he had already begun to establish his reputation by winning a series of professional fights. Some of his key career highlights include winning the WBO International super-middleweight title in 2013 and securing the WBO super-middleweight title in 2016, becoming the first Mexican boxer to win a world super-middleweight title.
One of his most memorable defenses was in April 2016, when he defeated Arthur Abraham to claim the WBO super-middleweight title. Despite facing numerous challenges, Ramirez continued to excel in the ring. In 2019, he moved up to the light heavyweight division and quickly made his mark by winning the WBO-NABO light heavyweight title. In 2021, Ramirez continued to impress with a victory over Sullivan Barrera, a seasoned veteran in the sport, and Yunieski Gonzalez. However, in a highly anticipated bout in November of 2022, Ramirez faced a setback when he was defeated by Dmitrii Bivol.
Technical Overview
Gilberto Ramirez operates from a southpaw stance where volume punching is the name of his game. Ramirez will step in at an angle and start offense from a jab that flows into smooth combinations. Ramirez will turn jabs into 2,3, or 4 punch combinations then remain defensively responsible by exiting with a reverse step or lateral step. Ramirez also mixes up his offense by mixing his jab with an up-jab or uppercut-like jab that comes from below to surprise his opponent. Ramirez also shoots his combinations without loading up on his shots so that he isn’t left off balance if any of the punches miss. It also allows him to seamlessly throw combinations without expending too much energy. It is generally good practice to end combinations with a jab or any punch with the lead hand even if it isn’t thrown with power to reset yourself and freeze your opponent, but Ramirez has the unusual tactic of ending combinations with his signature up-jab which comes from a blind angle. It is commonly known in boxing that the punch that hurts you the most is the one you don’t see coming, and this up-jab, even when thrown without much power, can surprise his opponents and hurt them.
